Polk County Judge Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage
Ruling a Wake-Up Call to Iowa Legislature Des Moines—August 30th
Polk County Judge Robert Hanson legalized same-sex marriage in Iowa
today in his ruling in the case of Varnum v. Brien. This decision has
devastating implications for the families of Iowa and should serve as a
wake-up call to legislators who suppressed debate and passage of the Iowa
Marriage Amendment.
“The fact that one district judge usurped the authority of the legislature and
the will of Iowans to make law from the bench is outrageous,” said Iowa
Family Policy Center President Attorney Chuck Hurley. “This ruling is
especially shameful because the judge determined that the political special
interests of one group trump the best interests of families and children in
Iowa.”
“This ruling is a wakeup call to Iowa legislators who refused to consider the Iowa
Marriage Amendment because of our Defense of Marriage Act. That act has
been thrown out the window by Judge Hanson and now is the time to act in
defense of marriage as a union between one man and one woman.”
